A Friendship That Changed Lives
They met as teenagers at a church youth group in Soweto. Three decades later, their friendship has become a lifeline for thousands of families across Southern Africa.

Melissa grew up in a home where the door was always open. Her mother, a domestic worker, would share their modest meals with anyone who knocked. "I learned early that giving is not about having much," Melissa says. "It's about having a heart that refuses to look away."
After studying social work at the University of Johannesburg, Melissa spent years volunteering in community feeding schemes across Gauteng. She would wake at 4 AM to prepare meals, drive to townships in her battered hatchback, and serve food with a smile that made every person feel seen.
It was during this time that she began to dream bigger. "I kept thinking - what if we didn't just feed people? What if we helped them grow their own food? What if we taught their children? What if we treated the whole person, not just their hunger?"
Today, Melissa leads Ceemel Healing Foundation with the same compassion and determination that defined her early years. She is known for visiting every project personally, remembering beneficiaries by name, and insisting that every program maintain the dignity of those it serves.
"I don't see statistics when I look at our work. I see Thabo, who now has shoes for school. I see Mama Grace, who has a warm blanket for winter. I see real people, and they deserve our very best."

Connie's path to founding Ceemel was forged in the fires of personal experience. Raised by her grandmother in a rural Limpopo village after losing both parents to illness, she understands intimately what it means to be vulnerable and what it takes to survive.
A scholarship to high school changed everything. "Education didn't just give me knowledge," Connie reflects. "It gave me options. It gave me hope. And I vowed that one day, I would create that same opportunity for others."
After earning her degree in Development Studies, Connie worked with vulnerable families in some of South Africa's most disadvantaged communities. She developed expertise in child protection, family preservation, and community development - skills that would prove invaluable when she and Melissa launched Ceemel.
Connie is the operational powerhouse behind Ceemel. She designs programs, manages partnerships, and ensures that every rand donated creates maximum impact. Her attention to detail and unwavering commitment to excellence have earned Ceemel a reputation for transparency and effectiveness.
"People sometimes ask why we work so hard. I tell them: because someone once worked hard for me. That's the cycle we are trying to create - not charity, but solidarity."
How They Met
Melissa and Connie met at a church youth camp when they were both sixteen. Melissa was the outgoing one, always organising activities and making sure everyone felt included. Connie was quieter, observing carefully, offering help before anyone asked.
Their friendship deepened over shared meals, late-night conversations, and a mutual passion for social justice. While their friends planned careers in business and law, Melissa and Connie volunteered at soup kitchens and visited orphanages.
"We were the weird ones," Melissa laughs. "While everyone else was at parties, we were packing food parcels. But we loved it. We felt alive when we were serving."
After university, life took them in different directions briefly. Melissa worked in social services while Connie pursued community development projects. But they never lost touch, and their weekly coffee dates always returned to the same question: "What more could we do?"
The turning point came on a cold winter morning in 2015. Melissa called Connie, shaken after visiting a family living in a shack with no food, no blankets, and a sick baby. "I can't do this alone anymore," she said. "We need to do something bigger."
That weekend, they cooked 50 meals in Melissa's kitchen and drove to a township. The food ran out in minutes. People asked when they would return. And Ceemel Healing Foundation was born.
The name came naturally. "Ceemel" combines the spirit of both women - the compassion that drives Connie and the practical action that defines Melissa. Together, they represent what is possible when heart meets hands.
Our Approach
Before designing any program, we spend time in communities, listening to what people actually need. Top-down solutions don't work. Community-led change does.
No organisation can solve poverty alone. We actively seek partnerships with churches, schools, businesses, government and other NGOs to multiply our impact.
Compassion without accountability helps no one. We rigorously track outcomes, publish annual reports, and hold ourselves to the highest standards of transparency.
Our goal is not to create dependency but to build capacity. Every program includes a pathway to self-sufficiency and dignity.
Governance
Our board provides strategic oversight, ensures accountability, and guides the foundation's growth.
